Marco Scarpa is full professor at University of Messina. He received the degree in Computer Science Engineering from University of Catania, in 1994 by discussing a thesis on Markov Regenerative Process applied to Petri and the Ph. D. on Computer Science from University of Torino. In November 2003, he was research assistant on performance evaluation of real time systems at Universtity of Messina.
His research activity is mainly focused on: modelling of non Markovian processes, extending the class of the Markov Regenerative Stochastic Petri Nets (MRGPN) where the hypothesis of only one transition enabled in a given marking has been released; algorithms for solution of non Markovian Petri net systems, based on a time discretization, in order to study both transient and steady-state behavior, optimized in terms of memory usage by the use of the Kronecker algebra; parallelization of solution algorithms by using MPI libraries and adaptation of these techniques to GRID environment, particularly taking into account load balancing and fault recovery processes; performance and reliability evaluation of distributed systems in general with specific interest to wireless networks and Cloud infrastructure, by using analytical models. He also devoted some effort in the automatic generation of models able to evaluate the performances of a software starting from its UML description; in this research area he coordinated the development of the ArgoUML tool, implemented as plug-in of ArgoUML software tool.
He coordinated the WebSPN software tool. WebSPN is a tool able to solve Petri nets for the study of system performances and reliability through efficient analytical methods and simulation.
He is referee of several international conferences and computer science journals such as: IEEE Transaction on Dependable and Secure Computing, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, Performance Evaluation, ACM Transactions on Autonomous and Adaptive Systems. Prof. Scarpa is member of the Editorial Board of The International Journal of Distributed Sensor Network, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. He has been member of technical program committees of several international conferences; actually, he is Technical Program Committee chair of the 10th International Conference on Performance Evaluation Methodologies and Tools (VALUETOOLS 2016).
Prof. Scarpa coordinated the University of Messina research unit in the Italian PRIN project “Wireless Sensor Networks for Dependable Monitoring of Critical Applications (WiSeDeMon)” and he was the coordinator of the training project SIGMA (PON01_00683), funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.
From 2014 to 2020, prof. Scarpa had in charge the coordination of the international Master Degree course in Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Messina
